Highly doubt it. It's not 100% impossible though. However it's fairly common worldwide for snakes to rattle their tails in dry leaves/vegetation to warn/scare away predators. It's just that the rattlesnake took it to the next level. Also several snakes hiss when threatened, not sure which you heard.

Could be one that has got out from some where
There was an article on Yahoo only today about exotic animals being sighted at loose in the UK - and an explanation that Global Warming has contributed to their more likely survival - so, maybe it was a rattle snake! Well scary
did you see the tail shake? that is how a rattler makes its sound otherwise it was just hit something else
well dude they just caught a 15FT! python next to mine depends on the climate and the adaptability of the creature

and folk releasing them cos they cant care for them.

Don't eat the mushrooms untill you get home!
call animal control, they will come and get it
I doubt that it was a rattlesnake, but I wasn't there, so I can't be sure. But the reason rattlesnakes have rattles is because back when Norht America was not as populated as today, large herds of grazing animals, such as bison, were quite common and could be a threat to a snake. To help from being trampled, snakes evolved a rattle to alert an animal to it's presence and cause the animal to avoid it. But since rattlesnakes havent evolved in Europe, it was either a snake "buzzing" it's tail in the leaves, or a real rattlesnake some moron released.
There are alot of great answers here, musch that I have to tell you, but one thing they missed, some snakes try to mimick the rattles snake by shaking their tail and hit it against some object I t often sounds like a rattle snake, I had several species of milk and king snake that used to do this all the time when they got annoyed with me going in their tank, these species can handle cold weather very well, so I wouldn't be suprised if they are found in your area, hope that helped. p.s rattlesnakes can also handle cold well, they just hibernate and with such lack laws about selling of snakes I would be surprised. take care!
