I was wondering if it was safe to use heat tape with the kind of plastic shelves they sell at the store to make a reptile rack. I would, of course, use a thermostat. I heard that the plastic has to be a special PVC material. Is this true. Couldn't you use any kind of plastic as long as you keep the temperature regulated?

it should be fine just avoid any sharp projections the snake can get poked with. and if there are places for the snakes to squeeze through make sure it can either get through it without a problem or be small enough the snake won't even consider going throught it. i had a snake once that tried to excape through a grating and it tore skin off which was painful and left a scar before she realized she couldn't get out that way.
as long as the plastic wont melt from heat from heat lights and doesnt chip off into the snakes cage, any should be fine
