Just found baby snake in my basment2007-11-24 2:01:30

I caught him ( to show the rest of family and I'll release him in backyard later) and he is small like a Garden snake but is brown with a yellow ring around his neck. I live in South NJ. Does anyone have an Idea the kind of snake I found is? Thanks

It could be either the Northern or Southern Ringneck snake. Take a look at page 8 of this document for positive ID.

i think it's a garter snake. i've caught a big one once and i think they're cute.

I don't know what kind it is but what you should be worried about is "where there is a baby snake there is ALWAYS a mom or dad snake around too"!

You fond a Ringneck snake- full grown they get to about 10"- they are a pretty small species.

It was inside because it was looking for shelter for the winter. it entered a small crack somewhere and got trapped in the basement. Basements are NOT where they want to be. Too damp, too hard to get out of, and too many people around.

Let it go in the back yard away form the house and you'll never see it again.
