Kingsnake and hamster in the same room2007-11-24 2:01:31

I've always wanted a hamster and I'm wondering if keeping one in the same room will make my snake more aggressive. There's no way he can get out of his tank so the safety of the hamster isn't in question. I'm just wondering if the smell of a rodent might sort of switch him into prey mode 24/7. He's never ever bitten me but I'm afraid if there's a hamster in the room he might. Thanks!

I've had both rodents & reptiles. Personally I wouldn't keep them in the same room. I never had any trouble either, so I would offer the advice to not fall prey to anything that might remotely resemble a 'stupid human trick'.

Snakes, due to their cold-blooded bodies, only eat when they have to. If you keep your snake well-fed, then it should not be an issue that you have a hamster in the room with it.

Think of it this way: out in nature, all sorts of wildlife exists just fine - until a snake is in need of food.

So just feed your snake as normal, and you should be fine.

Snakes feed when they need to, if you are very good at feeding him at the right time, he should never be concerned of your hamster AS LONG AS you feed him CORRECTLY, with exactly the right food, at exactly the right time, you'll prevent a moment when he ever needs to eat your precious hamster.

It shouldn't hurt at all, just don't keep them right next to each other and taunt the snake. And be sure to wash your hands well after holding hamster and before holding the snake!!

I had my ball python in my kids room where he has a rat and instantly he had the scent of the rat and was reacting to it. In my opinion not a good idea .

Well, you say the snakes not going to escape. Snakes are GREAT at escaping. I do not know how they do it, but it happens all the time. If you get a hamster, make sure that your snakes cage has a heavy duty latch to keep him from getting out
