My Turtle is Acting funny2007-11-24 2:01:49

My new red-eared slider turtle just got keeps hiding under a rock and he isn't that active at all. He won't eat and he won't move unless he needs air but thats it. is it normal for my turtle to be like that a couple days ?

1. Changing habitats is a big stress for turtles. It is common for them to behave oddly for a week or two. Keep things quiet, minimize stress, don't handle it, and keep things a little warmer for a week or three.

2. Please take this time to ensure that you are offering the right basic cares and diet. Turtles that do not eat often do so because the temps are too cool, cage is too small, or diet is not right. Fix the glitch and things get better.

Maybe he's ready to hibernate. Check with a vet but I'd bet the ranch it's hibernating time

First, stop messing with him and handling him. Let him get used to his new surroundings. Either that or its sick and preparing to die. Just leave it alone.

I would personally talk to a vet about this issue. Its just better to be safe than sorry, and if the bad did happen you would save yourself the trouble of asking yourself the question, "what if".

It does take several days to get acclimated to a new aquarium, but you should check the water temp. If it is too cold it will not eat.

No it's NOT normal:

Either it is too stressed because of the handling or the new environment; or it is sick.

I once had a turtle who was very active but then it turned to the one you described (hiding under rocks; doesn't eat), and soon, it died.

Try to reduce the stress like putting tank in the corner so less traffic and try not to look at it too much. If a few days later, it still acts like before. Go to vet, it might be sick.

if you have just gotten it a few days ago he is trying to get use to his new place.. give him some time alone.. Turtles will hide and are not really active animals in the day.. they are more active at night. if you are still concerned contact your vet.
