My turtle isnt basking And ALWAYS hungry2007-11-24 2:01:50

Ok i got him a month or so ago and he has adapted to his tank VERY well. he seems to be heathier then he was when he frist came here concidering he had a lil rot on his back that i fixed with some meds givin to me by the pet store. He seems to be HUNGRY all the time and he neverrr basks.. the temp in his tank is 75 and i have uv light that i put on for him.. but i never catch him on his shelf.. exept once when he was trying to get out.

Everyone i ask about this says i should up the temp but it gets like 80 in there when the light is on. any suggestions?? oh and he shows no sign of this bothering him. he loves the water!!

Yeah, upping the basking temp wouldn't be a bad idea. Water turtles generally are always hungry, you could over feed them and still think they are starving to death, lol. As for basking, they're pretty shy creatures, he could very well be basking when you aren't in the room. I've had my slider for about 6 or 7 years, and he still dives back in the water if I walk in and startle him. Just keep an eye out for more shell rot and he'll be fine :-)

We're missing a piece of information here, and that's what kind of turtle you have. Snapping turtles, softshell turtles, and a couple of other water turtles aren't interested in basking.

A turtle will always appear to be interested in eating. Watch that you don't overfeed!

hello! i own a russian tortoise and i can tell you right off the bat, that the tank NEEDS to be 80 degrees and if it isn't the turtle will be cold. my dad works at petco and he says that turtles don't nessessarily bask. i hope that helps. but only feed him once a day, maybe give him a snack..but what does he do that makes you think he's hungry??
