My turtles skin is shedding is that ok2007-11-24 2:01:52

It looks like white flakes are peeling off of it's skin? Isn't it that it's growing or something?

Answers:

Every now and then turtles will shed their skin, however if the shedding is to excessive then you might be overfeeding it or your water contains too much chlorine.

Don't panic, I have had 3 Russian box tortoises (land) and 4 red ear sliders (aquatic) all of them have done the same thing, the only time you need to start worrying is when the skin sheds to the point that it is not regenerating fast enough, IE there are sores on the turtle. when this happens remove him from his habitat and clean that, also keep him away from any other reptile this is a skin fungus which can be cured by topical ointments your vet can prescribe

it is absolutly ok all reptiles shed their outer skin which is called the exoskeleton and this process is called metamorphosis.so dont worry.

Your turtle is gettting to big for it's skin.It is normal for turtles to shed white flakes, even if their skin is a different color.

That is definitly normal. It would be bad if this didnt happen. This happens when the skin gets too dry, it comes off. Do not pull it off though, that will hurt. it will come off when it is ready.
