Pond Turtlesfreeze dried or live food2007-11-24 2:01:54

My pond turtle wont catch his own food, he won't eat live feeder fish or live crickets. We started giving it the freeze dried food and he eats very well now. The lady at the pet store was very upset with me and was trying to talk me out of freeze dried and said I should give it live food no matter what and that he will either learn to catch or learn to die. This turtle was tramtized when smaller.I think it just doesn't know how to catch food. But why make it suffer.

Who thinks freeze dry is okay and who thinks the mean old pet lady is right?

I prefer to eat my pond tutles fresh, though freeze dried would be nice if I am hiking.

If he's eating the freeze dried without a problem then that's what you should give him. If he's not catching his own food then it's your only option unless you want him to die (and I'm pretty sure you don't) It's probably ideal to have him eat live, but hey he's gotta eat!

You should ask her if she had a kid and she was feeding him something he wouldn't eat if she would let him starve. probably not!

I was thinking about this, what if you got another turtle. Mybe that one would eat live and the other would learn how. just a thought!

If your turtle is eating now, great, carry on. Just now and again try to introduce live food. The lady at the store was wrong to be very upset. Try adding some powdered Vitamiin powder to the freeze dried to give your turtle extra boost

I have 2 baby turtles in bkyard pool they eat minnows caught from the local creek/river and now and then i throw a worm or two in there for 'em!The babyflorida snapper i sometimes set in small area with a cppl small minnows to be sure he /she is eatin.It usually will snap up 2 minnows then it's good for cppl days.The other turtle is a painted pond turtle who is vert alert,be sure yours stay alert! been huntin turtles since a small child
