Question about my snake
Question about my snake2007-11-24 2:01:57
how do i know if my snake is male or female?
Answers:Not a clue, but my trouser snake is definately male.
Look between its legs. If you see a little wee wee, it's a male. If you see a lttle gash, it's a female.
You can ask your vet if they do snake probing to find out if it's a male or female. You can also look around for a local snake breeder and ask them to do it for you. Probing is the only real way in regards to snakes to know if they are male or female, especially at a young age.
Your best bet would be to take it to a vet or a professional reptile breeder. They will probe the snake. This involves using a little metal rod to measure the depth of their cloaca(butt). They count the scales to measure. If it is male it willhave a deeper cloaca, and if it female it will have a shallower one. If you cannot find someone to do it, you can buy a kit to do it yourself and read up on how to do it. This should be a last resort. Male snakes als tend to have a larger tail base, depending on the species. This isn;t always true though. The only way to be sure is to hve a trained pro probe the snake.
DONT try to probe it or pop it yourself. find a trusted reptile shop and ask tha manager if he has experience in probing..
yes a vet is a good way to go but its not that dificult of a thing to do and a vet will charge you 50 bucks to do it.
If you don't have a reputable breeder near you, take it to a herp vet for probing or xrays (which can be pricey). If probed, a female will probe few scales because the probe will be going into her musk glands. If it's a male, it will probe deeply because the probe will be going into the inverted hemipenes of the male.
