I have a salamander, and I don't know what kind of home to make it. I have a 10 Gallon aquarium to use to make his home. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Answers:

I just got a new salamander and got his tank set up. Go to the pet store and get some eco earth- compressed coconut fiber substrate. It looks like a brick of dirt. You soak it in water and it expands- A LOT. 1 block is perfect in a 10 gal tank. I also got a piece of T shaped PVC from home depot and half buried it and put one side against the glass so when he goes underground you can still see him. I gave him a shallow water dish too. The substrate is moist- good for their skin and easy for them to dig and burrow in.

I read that swallowing the gravel can be fatal. get it out of there soon! Hope this helps. Good Luck!!

salamander used to live in a cave, it likes rocky and wet environment.u can add some plants too.i think your aquarium is big enough.
Salamanders like boggy marshy type environments, potting soil (organic) mixed with gravel seems to work pretty good, build it up high on one end of the tank with water on the lower end, add pieces of wood and rocks for them to dig under to hide, you can add a small submersible filter to make clean up less of a chore.

Feed them frozen blood worm and brine shrimp as many Salamanders refuse to eat pellets.

A flat rock.
Don't listen to the previous posts, they don't even know what species of salamander you have. May I ask what kind of species of salamander you have? It is really important, because there are about 500 different species of salamanders each with their own unique habitat. For example some salamanders spend their whole lives in water, whereas other species spend their lives in thousands of meters in the Alps. If you post again I will be more than happy to give you a species appropriate habitat suggestion that will make your salamander happy. However, just to make a quick suggestion, you are right in realizing that gravel might not be the best choice for him, try organic potting soil or peat moss.
