Scale rot

Scale rot2007-11-24 2:02:40

I have a 5 month old male jaguar sibling. He's a bit longer than a foot. His lower half of his body is turning orangish. Only the lining of the scales are turning orange, not the scales itself. Its mostly on the bottom half and goes up a bit to the side of his body. I thought it was cuz he was gonna shed but he just shed 3 days ago. Do you guys know what this is??

That does sound a lot like scale rot. You may be able to treat it using antibiotic ointment, using paper towels as substrate, and lowering the humidity. however, I strongly recommend that you see a reptile vet as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of the condition and the specific causes, it could be fatal to your snake.

Here's a link with a picture of scale rot: http://www.snakegetters.com/slides/22pet.

So that's what happened to our bathroom scales! They are rotting! Thanks. Now I can try to open and fix them.

Actually, you are wrong for keeping a wild animal in captivity, as your own pet. Very selfish. I think you should donate him to a zoological garden, one with wide spaces like San Diego's.

Jaguars should not be kept as pets. They deserve to live free and roam in wide open spaces.

some snakes change color as they get older. usually scale rot looks like patches of dark wrinkly looking scales.
it might be color changing for it getting older as reptiles shed thet means their getting older, i have a green iguana and she is getting her orangeish - brownish colors for her teenager-lizard-hood but if there is something wrong with the scales itself i need to see a picture of it, my e-mail is turtlelytiger@yahoo.com
Take a picture of it and send it to my email.. out of curiosity.. what beding do you use? are you using a heat pad? what is the serface temp above the heat pad (if you have one). are you using a heat rock?
if you have a reddish colored heat rock in there with him, chances are the coloring wearing off the rock onto the skin. Is he always on the rock? My savanna monitor always laid on his rock and his belly turned reddish tint. Give him a bath and see if any coloring comes off the scales get a soap safe for reptiles and give him a bath. And take the rock out and get an under tank heat pad. Rocks will sometimes cook the reptile because they are always directly on them. And an under pad can be diffused with a thicker layer of bedding.
