On most turtles, the bottom front (plastern) of a male turtle is concave whereas on a female it is flat.

If you have a few, compare them.

The male will have longer nails, will grow smaller then females, and will have shorter tails. Now, this is with the native turtles I have here in Ontario. Painted, Spotted and the invasive Red Eared Slider. Depending on your area it may be different.

Don't believe the shorter nails and longer tails crap the only way to sex a turtle is by the shell on the underside, the male's is concave to facilitate or help in mating it helps to sort of cup the females upper shell, but it isn't that deep kind of like the palm of your hand, it's just enough to keep him from sliding off all the time, and the female's is flat
