Should I get a snake

Should I get a snake2007-11-24 2:02:43

What do you think would be a good type to start out with, never had any reptiles before. Are they easy to take care of?

Answers:

Ok

First If you have nver had a Reptile as a pet before. Do your research.. They are not always the easy pets they may seem to be.

WHAT you DONT GET

Is

Pythons, Boas, Iguanas, Dragons, Alligators,

SMALL corn snakes can be ok.. as are Turtles but small ones,

Maybe frogs etc.

Many reptiles eat Live foods, crickets, mice, bugs, rats ..

Stick to smaller things and you will be able to get food eaily and it wont be live.

Really read up on stuff.. not only search teh internet but call and talk to VETS and Zoo Keepers and even University Zoology or Herpetology professors.. all are great sources of really acurate hands on advice!

Maybe vist them as well.

WHEN you do decide what you are going to get..

Make sure you have its home set up and ready BEFORE you get it and you have located a VET who has expereince trteating the type of reptile you are getting.

Good Luck

If you get a snake, you will probably lose a lot of friends.
Just don't be one of those idiots who gets a boa or python or similar, and don't get a poisonous snake. Regular snake should do just fine. Ask at a pet store about caring for it.
No reptiles are not easy to take care of. They need fresh food (live) and that is not always easy to get. They have very specific temperatures that are hard to keep constant. They don't interact with you, there is no cuddling of a snake or lizard, they do not love you back, they will and can bite severely. Most people just get them for the "look at me, I own a snake" factor.
Despite what these previous people have said (and from their answers it is obvious they know nothing of reptiles) a reptile can be a wonderful pet. obviously there is no love factor (like cuddling) but there is a special feeling involved in handling a snake/lizard and raising it the point of where it recognises you as a non-threat (thats as far is it goes though). Unless you get an iguana or rock/water monitor, they get so tame that eventually they respond to name, can follow commands and even enjoy a good scratch - they become exactly like dogs!
