Should I separate two iguanas that have lived together for almost 3 years
The larger one is not always allowing the smaller one to eat. I acquired them from someone that was not taking good care of them. I tried putting food in two different spots but the smaller one still waits to eat.Since they have been together so long I was afraid to separate them. I am not sure of the sex of either of them since food, vitamins, and correct lighting have been my first concerns.
Answers:Well, if they aren't agressive towards eachother then that is good. Sounds to me like the bigger one is the male and the smaller one is the female. But iguanas are territorial. Even when it comes to their food. How big of an enclosure do you have them in? For more than one iguana, you need a room sized enclosure for them to be able to have their own space. Their health depends on their stress level. The lower their stress level, the healthier they will be. I recommend separating them, I know you are worried because they've been together for a while, but I know the smaller one will thank you for it. You should leave the larger one where he's at because he's already claimed it as his territory and relocate the smaller one. i'm glad you rescued them from someone that wasn't taking care of them, but you need to do some research. I recommend getting this book called "Iguanas For Dummies". it will tell you everything you need to know about them. You might be surprised how much there is to learn. Good luck.
Owner of a 4 year old, 6 foot long, male green iguana
get rid of one
try hand feed the smaller one
I would say seprate them but only at feeding time put one in one room and one in the other. Tehn when there done put them back together
just make sure that there is enough food ,the other one cannot eat forever
