What are snake mating habits? do snakes spray like cats? Is their venom really sex producing hormones??
Answers:As far as mating goes, it's generally a two-ships-passing-in-the-night scenario. Some species will for breeding balls with multiple males (anacondas and I think garter snakes), and some males will engage in ritual combat (cobras). Depends on the species really.
No they don't spray. Not for territorial or mating purposes anyway. Some will urinate or release a musk if threatened
Venom is produced by venom glands behind the head, and is a complex "cocktail" of enzymes and other substances that is injected into the prey when the snake bites, and is designed to incapacitate prey and/or aid in digestion. Secondarily it is also used as a defense mechanism. Often the venom will specialize in attacking/breaking down tissue, the nervous system, cause blood clotting etc.
