Snakes more likely in which setting
Part of my property is next to a cornfield..well, corn or soybeans depending on the crop rotation..the other part is next to woods with a natural spring running through it.
Due to a broken riding mower, I am having to push mow my lawn..and am freaked about my ankles being so close to the ground! Which side of the property am I more likely to encounter one of the slithery things? Or both..and does the sound of the lawn mower scare them away? I think that's a myth.
Does the perimiter snake repellent (snake away) really work?
Answers:Sounds like you're kinda screwed. Different snakes prefer different habitats, both of the ones you described would be preferable to a couple of different kinds. Snake repellant I have had poor success with, so I'll say it doesn't work, while others like the guy above have had decent results. It won't hurt you, so go ahead and keep using it. The mower vibrates quite a bit, so I would think most snakes would clear out shortly after cranking it up. All in all, I think you're OK, even though both places would make decent snake homes. Just keep your eyes open.
Don't forget that snakes are usually pretty skittish and if you are running a lawn mower, they will not bother you. I would guess that they may be more likely near the stream, but remember they are afraid of you, too.
sounds like upper midwest.not to many poisonous snakes there anyway. However,do what my mother does.she got a weiner dog and takes him with her when she works in the yard or garden.normally a dog points the prey and hunters shoot it,but my mother will freeze terrofide to move, her dog follows her gaze until he finds the scent and kills the snakes.she loves her dog, wont leave the house without him.as for the mower ive ran over a couple snakes before not much left of them after that.
Snake repellent does work (more or less). But you're very unlikely to encounter any snakes while mowing your lawn due to the fact that 1) most snakes are reluctant to remain in the vicinity of noisy lawnmowers, and 2) most snakes are loathe to approach humans and are far more likely to slither in the opposite direction if given the opportunity. So please relax, your chances of encountering a snake while mowing your lawn are very low. Wear tall boots if you're still worried.
Snakes don't hear, they sense vibrations. Given the choice, they're much more likely to flee than stand their ground. I'm by no means an expert, but I do spend a lot of time in snake habitat. A pair of boots and jeans, and a heavy step help me with my fear.
Dont be a pansy! you will be fine. Those poor snakes want nothing to do with you!! all they want is to be left alone. They wont attake you they will try to escape from you. grow some balls and go mow the lawn
