We were in the campground between Castle Rock and Big Basin in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Answers:I believe the only snake in that region that matches your description would be a Garter snake. They're quite harmless, though they may nip when handled. They eat slugs, snails, small fish and insects, and some will eat tiny mice.
Their main defense is to almost always "poop" out a splooge of foul-smelling musk when handled, and they will often make an effort to smear it over your hand / wrist for the best effect. It's unpleasant and stinky, but a rather effective though basically harmless deterrant.
