What do I feed my baby kingsnake2007-11-24 2:03:23

I bought a baby Banded (California?) Kingsnake for my boyfriend for his birthday. I need to feed it, but he's really small. He's probably about a foot long. He doesn't look like he could handle even a pinkie, but I read that as long as it's smaller than the largest diameter of his body, he can eat it. Is that correct? And, is there anything else I could feed him since feeding mice makes me squeemish? Also, he escaped from his enclosure yesterday and got really pissy when I found him and tried to pick him up. The lid to the tank doesn't fit tightly, but I had a heavy book on top to press it down. What kinds of enclosures are best for kingsnakes?

feed it a pinkie it can handle it trust me I thought the same thing with my snake I don't like rodents of any kind so I always purchased frozen mice and thawed them out with hot water for about 5-10 minutes you can tell when they are thawed. I use forceps held the mice by the tail and slowly hung them into the cage. I keep my snake in a aquarium and made a cover with a type of chicken wire but with smaller holes. It worked just fine. The more you handle the snake the faster it will get used to you, I take my snake everywhere with me until about a year ago she is to big now. Unfortunately snakes get very confused around feeding time simply by mistaking your hand and/or fingers as a mouse. I would no matter the size of your snake to use leather gloves. Also get you snake used to being feed in a seperate tub, bowl, or other cage. Simply beacuse if you feed them in a their cage they will become used to being feed in their. Therfore the result problem of that is they will think it is feeding time every time you reach into that cage. This is why it is very important to have them feed into a different bowl because everytime they see that bowl then they will go into "feedin mode" same as with the gloves. After a while they will become trained to that.
