What size tank is right for an adult ball python
My baby is growing like a bad weed. She is in a tank that is about 3'longx2'highx1.5'wide (I have no idea what size in gallons that is either if anyone would like to tell me!) I'd like to MAKE her a cage that is taller since she is always stretching towards the top. My old snake did not do this so I though her cage was the right size. If anyone has links to DIY sites that would help me or, can give me some advice I'd appriciate it! Thanks. (P.s please do not tell me a size in gallons. Tell me the measurements. I'm dumb when it comes to gallons!!)
Answers:I agree with Meaningless, the current size would be fine but if you have the space, I say go bigger. Is your snake female? Female balls are often a little larger than males, and honestly our 7 year old male would be a little cramped in a 3 foot long tank. Our ball's current set up is in a 5' long 2 high 1.5 wide tank and he seems to enjoy the extra space, but he isn't one to explore height. If you don't want to build your own you can try pre built cages by Boaphile or Cages by Design. I don't know of any free DIY plan sites but I've listed the only one I know of off the top of my head.
really that sounds about right.. you have her in a 40 gal right now and that should be fine for the life of the snake.. if you wanted to do a 3'/2'/2' you could but it seems like you have plenty of room i wouldn't really worry about it.
the larger the tank the faster your snake will grow. it also allows for the snake to be more comfortable.I used to have a albino burmese python that was about 4 feet long when i put him in a tank that i built it was 9ft x 4ft x 4ft. it had everthing from limbs to rocks, even a small pond with a waterfall. I would recommend for your snake make your cage at least double its size 6 x 4 x 2-3 wide.
40 gallon or 55 gallon is perfect. If you want to be different though, like me, I revamped an old china cabinet to house my ball python. It even came with places for the heat lights to sit in. All I did was take out the shelves, put in some branches and a few hiding places and voila. I did cut one of the shelves in half to put in a couple ledges for her to sun, and sleep on. It even came with a lock on the doors. I paid about $50 bucks for cabinet, and she loves it. Keeps my wife's cat from her also.
The general rule of thumb is the tank shoud be 1.75 times the length of the snake and 1.5 times in width.
