I live in NC and my house is surrounded by little lizards that range from 1 to 3 inches long. They change colors from green to brown and eat ants that I know of. My question is this, my kids are wanting to keep one as a pet. I have a ten gallon tank so would it be feesable to buy a light and heated rock for the tank and keep one or should I buy them a diffrent type of lizard that I can know for sure what it is so there will be no question on diet or special care?

What you have there are probably anoles. They are very popular pets. They are insect eaters. Wild lizards do not take well to being forced to live in captivity. If you get a wild lizard and put it in a tank chances are it will probably die. Ten gallons is kind of small even for an anole. They get bigger than 3 inches you might just be seeing a lot of babies. Hot rocks shouldn't be used. They get too hot and they'll burn the lizard. Reptiles are not the easiest pets to care for. They need special care and everything has to be perfect for them to live in captivity. If you're planning on getting a reptile for your kids do a lot of research on the species you want before bringing it home. Here is a link to some care sheets that you can look at.

They sound like the little anole lizards that were all over South Carolina when I was there. They are sold in pet stores as chameleons.

these little lizards are most likely anoles. they are sold at pet stores around the nation. and live numerously in the warm southern states. they eat small insects, in captive eating small crickets and dried flys. very easy to maintain. they need warm humid climate 80-90 in the day.

if you do keep the wild lizard you will probably need a light over the tank but if you dont get one get a bearded dragon im getting one

An Anole! Go to a pet store in your area and ask them to show you an anole. They are very common.
