What type of snake

What type of snake2007-11-24 2:03:53

I am looking to get a snake but do not know what type to get with three children. I would like to have some type of constrictor snake that feeds on small mice. Also what kind of equipment do I get for a snake? I live in a cold climate so I know I would need some type of heat lamp. Any serious info would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hey Brian,

Ok if you want a constrictor that eats mice go for a juevenile Ball Python. They are known for having a good temperment and i have met some that are down right tolerant. I would go for a large enclosure to start, he will need room to grow. I personally would get a 40-60 gallon even though he will look lost initially, i am thinking more long term..

I have a five foot one now in an 80 gallon tank. For substrate i would shy away from the bark or sand as this will get caught in thier mouth when feeding. Newspaper is also not on my list as there are vapors from the ink. Alot do use this though, i prefer not. I use fake grass making sure there are no loose edges. Alternately you could use rabbit alfalfa pellets simply because if ingested it is not harmful. You can remove the fake grass to clean but would end up scooping out bad parts of the pellets to keep it clean and dry.

Next, stay away from the traditional hot rocks, they have a bad rep for faulty thermostats and can possibly lead to skin burns. Use an undertank heater or i have even used heating pads that are intended for people and wrapped them in a pillowcase.
