Where to find baby box turtles
Where is a good habitat in Virginia to find baby eastern box turtles? I know they are hard to find, but I'm still going to try. Are fields or woods better? How would I go about looking for them? under rotting logs? near water? sides of roads? Help me out here!
Answers:Keeping in mind that in many states it is illegal to possess a turtle with a shell diameter of under 4 inches (unless it is for educational or research purposes), you may want to try looking near paved areas very early in the morning (just as the sun is rising) or early evening (dusk). They enjoy the warmth of the pavement and will seek it out, which is why you see so many turtles squashed on the side of the road. Also if you are looking for a pet, please keep in mind that baby turtles can be difficult to care for and have a high mortality rate in captivity, even with optimum conditions.
Your best bet would be to find a breeder of them. Taking them in from the wild causes undue stress, and can result in the death of the animal, along with other things. If you have other herps in your home, you could bring in parasites and illnesses that can affect your other pets.
A good breeder will also give you a few other benefits: a health record for the animal, eating record (for example, an animal from the wild may not eat anything you offer it, even if it is starving), and possibly a guarantee - if it is sick or dies you could get your money back or a replacement, or something to that effect. Plus, you wouldn't be considered a poacher, or a supporter of poaching.
Now, if you are just looking for box turtles to see them in the wild, you may want to consider revising your question to reflect that. Either way, I hope you choose the best path possible for the sake of the animals.
