Why does my bearded dragon become paralyzed on one side of his body at times
He becomes paralyzed the first time when he was picked up and recently his left side was paralyzed when he was in his cage.
Answers:Take him to the vet ASAP. It could be calcium deficiency or impaction. With calcium d, your UVB light shouldn't be any older than 6 months. It needs to be changed every 6 months. Is there any plastic or cover over the UVB? If so, take it off. UVB rays cannot go through glass or anything of that nature. UVB is for calcium absorption. You should be dusting his crickets atleast 3 times a week with calcium with vitamin D3 and no phosphorus. Calcium deficiency is an early stage of MBD (metabolic bone disease) and in some severe cases of MBD causes the dragon to drag themselves along the ground making them look paralyzed. Impaction is another thing that will actaully
cause paralysis. Prey should be no larger than the space between their eyes. Loose substrates, such as sand, walnut shells, reptibark, etc can also cause impation. If you have a loose substrate, take it out and lay down some paper towels. Give him a lukewarm soak for 20 minutes. Fill the water up to his shoulders. Do not leave him unattended. The soak will help digestion and bowl movements if he is impacted. Your dragon needs to be seen by a herp vet as soon as possible. If you have trouble finding a vet, try www.herpvetconnection.com
Hope this helps and good luck with your beardie!!
maybe it doesn't get enough sunlight
It might be from him not getting enough calcium. I dust my Beardie's crickets with calcium powder before I feed them. Also if you feed him spinach, it is bad for him. I'm not sure why exactly but it has to do with not letting him absorb calcium. You might want to look that part up for yourself! Also impaction can lead to paralysis I believe. If the pieces of food are too big they get stuck inside him and he can't poop. Hope he is feeling better soon!
It becomes paralyzed because it is lowering its body temperature normally while sun bathing.
