Why does my snapper have filmy stuff on him2007-11-24 2:04:53

My baby snapper has whiteish filmy stuff that looks like skin thats sheding off of him. is this normal? and is there something i can do about it?

Answers:

Where is he shedding? It is very normal for snapping turtles to shed on their shell. His scales might become loose and filmy and fall off (maybe after hanging on and looking yucky for a couple days). If he is shedding on his skin, his legs or head, I would be a little more concerned. It is pretty natural for them to shed their skin, but it usually only lasts for maybe a week and then he shouldn't shed again for maybe a month. You should keep him in clean water to help him from developing a fungus on his body. If your turtle seems healthy, that is a good sign. If he starts acting sluggish or his eyes get foggy, he may be ill. My best advice is to observe him closely. I think that his shedding is probably just natural, but keep a close eye on him to make sure that he doesn't have any other signs of being ill.

i don't think turtles shed i think he is sick and u should probley get it too the vet.
This could be the result of a chemical imbalance in the water that causes his body to become covered in a disgusting little film.

What i would suggest is getting a SOFT toothbrush and scrubbing him lightly all over his body. He may seem resistant at first, but it doesn't hurt him.

Turtles shed their skin just like all other reptiles, and it sounds like your turtle is indeed shedding. Speaking from personal experience, when snapping turtles shed it looks really nasty. The skin has a tendency to hang on for a while, and it gets all gooey. Just make sure the new skin underneath looks healthy and your turtle is eating okay. If the skin looks weird (raw, bloody, very pronounced bones) or the turtle stops eating, then you need to worry.
It can be one of two things:

Normal shed- turtles shed in two ways- a minor overall peeling in patches, like sunburn and thin sheets from the scutes- like thin fingernails.

Skin fungus- this can be the result of poor water conditions.

With a young turtle, I'd actually bet the fungus.
