Why doesnt my snake like water2007-11-24 2:04:55

I have a 3 year old ball python that does not seem to like water. Im affraid he will get dehydrated if i dont do soemthing. I have had him for 3 months now and have never seen him in his water. I recently started misting his tank and when i do that he looks really mad. If he happens to be out when i do it he tries to hide from the water. Is this ok? Could he be sick? Do i need to worry? He eats and poops and sheds ok, but ive never owned a snake before and i just want to make sure im doing everything right. Thanks you- Barbie*

Ball Pythons are not "water snakes". They do not need to be constantly around water to be comfortable. They do, however, need water. Without a proper water source they can become dehydrated, impacted (intestinal blockage) or have difficulty shedding properly or completely.

Provide a water bowl that is large enough and deep enough for your snake to completely submerge himself, and keep the water as clean as possible.

Even though you have "never seen him in his water", that doesn't mean he isn't using it. Ball Pythons are nocturnal, and can be quite secretive when the lights are on. I have had several individuals who would not eat, drink, or even come out of hiding unless their lights were off.

If he seems to be getting upset when you mist his tank you might be using water that is uncomfortably cool for him. Try warming the water a bit before you give him his shower. (personally, I don't care for cold showers either :-) )
