Why is it
People automatically assume you have to feed snakes live?? In reality it is better, not to mention safer, to feed prekilled, be it frozen/thawed or fresh killed. I have read several questions of "should I get" being answered with "if you like feeding live". Granted some snakes won't eat dead prey, we have an african rock python that was this way but we found he would eat what we call "twitchers", which is basically just knocked out to the point of no return, the rat is still twitching but won't "wake" up. There are several problems that can be brought on by feeding live which includes, but not limited to, if the snake gets bit they could go off feed, they could receive serious injuries which could result in extremely high vet bills and/or loss of your snake. I know there are several fellow snake "parents" out there who could and should give these new "parents" or wanting to be new "parents" advice on how to care for them. Hopefully most will do lots of research beforehand though.
Answers:i think frozen are better. if the snake gets hungry enough it will eat thawed food. I also have a 7ft rock python and a true red tail boa i have had worm problems with both of them from feeding live. freezing kills most parasites. some people have no business having a snake that they know nothing about just that its "cool"
Frozen is better. Some snakes will let rodents literally chew off their skin if they aren't hungry. Freezing also kills any bacteria on the rodent. Feeding f/t is better for the snake, definitely.
Oh my gosh how I agree, Most of these people need to know most snakes are captive bred and most will eat frozen. And so preferable as bite injuries can be very expensive.
my ball python will NOT eat dead, some snakes are just like that, my little blood python's on p/k tho, it is more fun to watch the hunt but it can give injury, especialy when you go get a boa and you drop in a live rabbit and after the snake grabs it that rabbit's kicking its legs so hard it rips off the scales. too many horror stories with live food.
