Will green iguanas in the wild harm cats2007-11-24 2:05:07

We live in Mexico, and our new casa has a tree in the backyard that is home to two huge (3 foot) green iguanas. We are very excited about this, and then realized that our three cats might be in harm's way - will the iguanas pose any danger to them?

I have an Iguana and I also have 3 cats. My old cat leaves the Iguana alone but the two younger cats are my hunters - they fight with the Iguana and the Iguana always wins. The tail is like a whip and when the cat is hit by one the welts are sometimes bad.

On one occasion the Iguana hit my small black cat just right and so hard it ripped his skin open like a knife - the vet could not believe it. So the answer is Yes - If you have hunting cats that like to test other animals they may be in for a rude awakening.

Iguana are usually very calm and are vegetarians but cross one the wrong way and their defense mechanism of tail and claws can hurt quite bad. In the wild Iguanas can also carry Salmonella so be careful yourself and if you touch one always make sure to use the hand gel that kills bacteria.
