Will my box turtle be okay outside in the winter,with heavy rain and cold weather, I live in Califor2007-11-24 2:05:08Answers:

Yes if the enclosure is deep enough for it to dig into and hybernate. I had two that lived for a long time loose in my back yard. They would bury themselves in the winter and emerge again in the warm spring weather.

Box turtles, especially eastern box turtles fair well in the conditions of nothern and central california. I used to have a large collection of box turtles and would keep them outside yet despite the cold they would never hibernate. Perhaps it just wasnt as cold as I thought, or perhaps it was because they had an abundant supply of food throughout the winter months, mainly snails. Anyhow, the decision to allow your turtles to hibernate can be a good thing under the right conditions, however, if your turtles have been living indoors all their lives, right now might not be the best time to acclimate them to outside conditions, instead maybe hold off until spring and then start allowing them to live outside. Well, my dear, it depends on what you mean by cold. And the person who answered "put holes in the box". LOL A box turtle doesn't mean he is in a box, it is a breed of turtle.
