It is made from ground walnut shells, which even though that is a safe food.. it will cause bacteria, mold, mites and can pull the humidity out of the tank and will cause irritation of the hermit crab's sensitive abdomen.

The people at the store have no clue. so don't bother asking them We have over 15 years experiance with land hermit crabs, and have spent that time not only owning them but studying and researching every aspect of them including the proper care and keeping of them. We still have our original crabs in fact and have only had 4 deaths and 100% molt success rate.. over 500 molts, we actually didn't count in the begining.

Why not go with a plain sand? It's what they're in when they are in the wild. That package says it is for desert animals, hermit crabs are not desert animals.

They sell sand made especially for hermit crabs at Petsmart. I don't think sand made for arid environments is ideal. Hermit crabs need a humid environment. The arid sand may not hold moisture and therefore be too dry for the crabs.

yes that would be fine for hermit crabs and with sand it can cause impaction if they ingest it

My thought would be no - mainly because hermit crabs need humidity in their environment, and this stuff is specifically made for desert animals.

NO use that cali-sand instead they need lots of calicum and the sand needs to be damp also..put in an egg shell or cuttlebone for them to chew on and a damp sponge for water
