Don't overfeed him, and make sure he has a long tank so he can swim distances back and forth. Don't feed him fatty foods often. Feed him live food, not canned dry food. You can get crickets, house bugs, beetles, or even gold fish for them. Anything they would normally eat in the wild. Just make sure that you feed it a variety of foods. Make sure that if you get rid of the dry food all together, you give your red-ear slider veggies too. We have two red-ear sliders, and we give them everything from lettuce, carrots, and celery to moths, fish, and store-bought crickets. They are heathly and not too fat, like I have seen some get. 1. Big tank- aim for 10 gallons of swimming space per inch of turtle. Make sure the water is heated and well-filtered.

2. Proper diet- don't overfeed. A serving should be about the size of the turtle's head, and only babies should be fed daily. Young are fed every other day, and adults every three days or so.
