im moving 800kms how do i get my corn snake ready for the move2007-11-24 2:00:41

Sammy is 5 yrs old and in good health. I'm worried about her getting too cold or too stressed out. Do i feed her before we go?

Answers:

Don't feed before the trip unless it's long enough before that it'll defecate before you leave (I think 2-3 weeks min.) The snake won't starve for months so that's not a concern. How are you traveling, btw? Assuming by car, it's no prob. whatsoever. Put your snake in a pillow case and tie the top into a loose knot (so you can get back into it easy enough but not too loose that the snake gets out, right?) Then get yourself a disposable styrofoam cooler with a few small holes punched in the top and put a heat pack in the bottom of the cooler. A heat pack like the kind used for muscle injuries where you break a bag within another bag and the chemical reaction produces heat? Be careful with this, though, and make sure it's not too hot for your snake. Just to be safe, you could wrap the heat pack in a small towel and just let the heat kind of diffuse out into the cooler. Then, with your wrapped heat pack in the bottom of the cooler, put the pillow case on top of the wrapped heat pack and then put the lid with holes in it on top of the cooler! I used this method for a 7 hour car trip with a boa of mine once and he was just fine. Also, I got a ball python shipped from California to Colorado by jet and it came shipped just like this.no problem. BTW, when I did this with my boa, I kept a outdoor thermometer in the cooler with the readout on the seat next to me so I could watch the temp. Also, you could always take along an extra heat pack just in case after the first one wears out the temp starts to get too cold. Don't sweat it, follow this and the snake will be fine. I was real nervous when I first did this and I kept opening the cooler and checking the snake but he was always just asleep in the bag and I prob. was pissing him off waking him up all the time (plus I was letting the heat out when I did it too!) I would recommend you maybe check halfway through your trip and otherwise just leave him alone, especially if you are able to use a thermometer like I said. you can get them at places like radio shack for real cheap,m maybe $10 U.S. Good Luck!

I wouldn't feed her before the trip, well I would feed her before the trip just not right before the trip.

Maybe a week or so before you leave. How will you be traveling, plane, car, train?

In a plane I'm not sure how she will do, I have never flown with a snake (i do wish I could insert an Samuel L. Jackson joke though)

In a car you can keep her warmer and more comfortable in a pillowcase on the passenger seat or even in your lap.

Train: I think you can take her with you.

I don't know for sure. Make sure she has a full bowl of water for the days leading up to the trip and right when you get to your destination.

I would feed her two days befor the move and put her in a pillow case and then into a Styrofoam cooler
