jaguar carpet sibling wont eat2007-11-24 2:01:29

I got a jaguar carpet sibling 9 days ago and hes been getting used to his new enclosure. The problem is, he wont eat. Ive tried every method with no luck. He is 4 months old. The temperature humidity and enclosure seems perfect. I dont see why he wont eat. Sometimes he strikes at it defensively and then spits it out. Most of the time he ignores it. What should i do? (his last meal was with his owner which was about 16 days ago)

Answers:

don't stress. as you said he is getting used to his new environment. most snakes won't eat unless they feel secure and comfortable in their surroundings. 16 days since last feed is quite recent too. snakes can last months without a meal and still be ok.

suggestion: leave the snake alone for another 5-7 days. offer food item. if you feed live (you really shouldn't cause your snake can easily be damaged) let him go. if you feed dead food items, warm them to 37-40 degrees celcius and wiggle them in front of your snake to simulate live prey (you can use tongs to hold the prey if worried about copping a strike). if he won't swallow it repeat this method a week later.

in my opinion it sounds like he is just getting used to surroundings. offer it a hide box or two so it can retreat if stressed.

But please don't stress yet. if in 2 months it still has not eaten you may have to "force feed" which is not fun. Good luck!

are you feeding live or dead??

Snakes kill out of instinct, not just for fun. If he isnt hungry, he will kill and leave it.
