just purchased bearded dragon baby, any good tips
he is about 8 weeks old, i got my viv all set up, heat mat at one end and a daylight bulb for uv and heat, im not sure if its giving enough heat though ?, a few rocks a,d logs for him to climb on but he doesnt seem very active ? is that normal ?
Answers:what size is you Viv for a full grown beardy it should be at least 4"x2",mine has a log for climbing on and the heat light is positioned over the log for basking, the air temp is 85-95 degrees F and the hot spot should be 110-115 degrees F,the UV light should be a maximum of 12 inches away from the dragon as UV doesn't travel that far.
DO NOT use heat mats or hot rocks as these can seriously burn your lizard, and are not natural as beardies in the wild get their heat from the sun which is above them.
You didn't mention what you are feeding him,you should offer veg every day but NOT iceberg lettuce or broccoli or cauliflower, they are calcium binders and WILL kill you dragon, you should also feed a baby, 3-4 small crickets no bigger than the size of the space between the dragons eyes,2 times a day, these crickets should be dusted with calcium and vitamin supplement's every 2-3 days,I use Nutrabal for this,
hope this helps, there are loads of sites with care sheets for dragons on the web just enter "bearded dragon care sheets" in your search engine.
good luck.
olive oil a drip in its water every week
Just one thing---always wear fire retardant clothing! (snicker)
hes probaly just settling in give him time.
I heard that they cook up nicely with potatos and onions.
i hope you have a decent sized cage for him. and also handle him a lot so he gets used to people.
Ask his mum and dad, they'll be looking over you shoulder any minute now!
We got a baby beardie 6 weeks ago.It took him about 3 days to get used to his new tank.He is very active now but not in the begining. He comes out of his tank every night and loves to crawl up our arms and sleep at the nape of your neck.We dont handle him for ay least an hour after he has been fed.He became lethargic just before he shed his skin but came back to life after. We give him a luke warm bath twice a week which he loves and will come to the front of the tank when he wants out.Our 2 dogs have taken a great interest in him and he will crawl onto thier backs for a snooze.Give him plenty of oppotunity to explore our seems to thrive when out his tank exploring.Hope this helps if you are anything like us you watch thier every move and worry when they do something different. It certainly looks like you have everything he needs in his tank but do you cover his crickets in vitamin powder? If not i suggest you get some from your local pet supplier.Good luck
Best tip: Put all the heating elements on one side of the cage. That way there is a super warm basking spot and the rest of the cage is cooler. He can pick what's coziest for him anytime.
