my bearded dragon is anorexic and i have been force feeding her supplements and veggies and such and2007-11-24 2:01:34

and other things that i got online that are supposed to provide maximum nutrition and electrolytes for bearded dragons that won't eat.

i force-fed her breakfast this morning, and i usually force feed her again, nights. but tonight she willingly ate a superworm and 3 bites of lettuce, should i feed her any more?

she is 3 years old and has been completely anorexic for about 2 months, and off and on anorexic since birth. she seems to be healthy otherwise. i thought she had parasites, so i bought some preventitive/treatment, and i gave that to her. and sometimes she gets constipated. and some days she seems really lethargic. but most of the time she is fine.

am i doin what i should be doing? we have no reptile vets near where i live so i am just going by what i read online, and also my judgment.

should i feed her again tonight being that she ate a superworm and 3 bites of lettuce?

ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Hi, Im in beardie rescue. I find that most of the constipated beardies I get in haven't been fed enough greens. They need greens( kale, broccoli rabe, leafy dark lettuce) on a daily basis. Its great that she ate a super and a few bites of lettuce, but if she doesn't eat enough greens, she will become dehydrated. Then you have a VERY sick lizzy on your hands. You need to make sure you dont overdo the calcium too much can be as bad as not enough. You should get a blender, mix a few worms(wax worms are easiest on the stomach) leafy greens and some carrot pieces, mix up with water or baby food veggies, and feed through syringe if you are trained in it. If not, its best to put it in a small bowl and put a worm on top to draw her attention. You also need to check the cage temp. basking between 100and 110, cool side no lower than 75 and warm side at least 90. Your best bet is to get some bloodwork done at a vet. It may be a calcium issue ,mbd, or another thing that you might not be able to treat on your own. Good luck, and feel free to contact me if you need any help.

If she isn't eating then she is SICK. Constipation is a HUGE problem with them. Often if you place the bearded dragon in warm water (NOT HOT) it will help it go to the bathroom. By the way, ALL veterinarians have to study reptiles in the course of their schooling. They CAN treat the reptile.
Either she is sick, scared, or doesn't like its evirnment. Any vet should be able to at least answer question most should be able to take care of your pet.
I have 5 beardies myself, there can be days where they won't eat and there are days when they eat way to much. Have you switched the food source to a different source lately? Please be careful when force feeding them, they tend to get very resentful over it. I have taked to my pet store owner, and he says that they should eat every other day, and to make sure they are getting their vitamens, along with the calcium. also, try getting ahold of one the online bearded dragon breeders sometimes they can be helpfule, sorry i wish i can do more for ya .
if u have any dog food just try her on a little of that they seem to like the sloppy meaty ones with gravy dont force her just touch a little on the tip of her nose n she will get the sent n if she wants it she will go for it if not she might need to see the vet ,she could of been not to hungry from winter they dont eat as much that time anyhow so just see if she picks up in the warmth
Whatever you do, don't feed super worms exclusively because they are so addictive. Make sure there is a water bowl in the cage that's big enough for the beardie to soak or bathe in. No iceberg lettuce either. If dandelions are available in your area, get some of them, they are very nutritious. Beardies also eat wax worms and pinkie mice. Zoo Med makes a great bearded dragon diet in pellet form also.
