my corn snake is about 8 years old, and has lately refused to feed i have tried varying times of fee2007-11-24 2:01:39

has anyone suggestions on how to induce feeding. i have tried forcing, covering the tank, smaller and different food items. HELP.

is he getting ready to shed? snakes can go a longish time without food, don't panic.you've done the right things but sometimes force feeding is traumatic to reptiles and should be done as a last resort as this can make them even less ready to feed.try changing the heat, {higher maybe} or light, mine stops feeding without a special uva low spec uvb tube, it needs to be changed every year even tho its still producing light, there is great debate over corn snakes and their lighting requirement some say they live with no light at all but i know mine stops feeding without this light.you must be careful tho as uvb can be dangerous to snakes in to higher quantity.how about her vit D3 levels? if shes not been receiving enough it can cause problems and going off food is a sign,.

Snakes can go quite a while without feeding. I don't know about corn snakes in particular, but my boa would sometimes go 3 or 4 weeks without eating. He especially would refuse food if he was about to shed because his eyes would glaze over, thus reducing his vision. I guess it was his instinct not to eat because if he had limited vision in the wild, he might end up being the eatee rather than the eator if he struck at the wrong animal. If it goes on too long, though, I would see a vet that knows reptiles.
