my four year old is upset can someone tell her how long an african dwarf frog can hold its breath2007-11-24 2:01:42

If they are fully aquatic, how do they breathe? I don鈥檛 see any gills.

They breathe much like a betta or other anabantoids - except they cannot take any air in directly from the water; they must breathe atmospheric air just like us. If you watch a frog for a few minutes, you will see that they come up to the surface very quickly and strike the water. This is them taking in a gulp of air (sometimes, they will let out little bubbles after they take a breath). Then, they will frantically swim back down to the bottom - and they usually don鈥檛 care if anything is in their way! Rocks, plants, fish - doesn鈥檛 matter. They鈥檒l zoom to the substrate.

All i can find is that they can hold it for a long long time, before they have to come up for air. Sometimes they can be lazy and float on the top so they don't have to hold their breath. poke it and make it move so your kid doesn't worry.

No they cannot breathe through their skin ADFs have lungs just like every other frog and must breath air, however they can stay submerged for long periods of time and are fully aquatic, they only come up every once in a while throughout the day to the top of the tank to take a gulp of air and then dart back down to their hiding place again.
