Most reptiles retreat to safety when it's ready to molt (shed it's skin). If you haven't had him long and havent' seen the behavior before, that's the most likely cause.

On the other hand, it could be because your gecko is sick which would also cause him to retreat.

Observe him closely, molting behavior typically lasts for a week or two and you'll see his skin begin to peel. If he's sick, chances are you'll need to ask a herpetologist about gecko illnesses.

three days is rather long. i recomend you take him out and look for signs of sickness or any reason for it. has he been crapping? what kind of gecko. did the weather change the three days ago? if the weather is dull/colder/overcast than usual then the behavior of yur gecko can be perfectly normal even if the terrarium has lighttubes- he is just sleeping through lousy time. check the temperature and humitity in the terarium, check the heating and the termometer too if they are working properly. if too hot too cold, the reptile will go and hide. have there been more people around the terrarium? maybe he is just shy of strangers or too much activity around him?
