questions about bearded dragons2007-11-24 2:01:58

HI,

my 7 year old son is bringing home a bearded dragon, I was just wondering if these animals are safe for children to handle, is there any threat with them at all? Are they good animals to have in the home?? Does any one have nay expeirence with these at all ?

Answers:

No worries, Dragons are safe pets with wonderful personalities. The only time I ever got bit was because I had fruit on the very tip of my finger: the dragon let go right away, realizing the mistake.

Dragons require a little more effort then a cat, but do not shed all over the place or make people sneeze, a wonderful benefit :)

Here is a page with lots of information and more ressources:

Also, check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pogona. and sign up: very very helpful community that will answer your questions with precision as much as possible. You will also pick up tips to make your life easier when caring for your new friend.

I strongly suggest buying The Bearded Dragon Manual. It will help you understand the dragon's needs and his behavior. It will give both you and your son a reference on hand at all times.

Well they do bite, and they can have quite nasty bacteria in their mouths that will infect the bitten area. They can get quite large too, like the size of a small goanna which is a little too large for a 7 year old to pick up. I don't think they like being handled too much and will defend themselves. Why don't you get him a puppy instead?
these can be extremely great family pets, they need to be cared for specifically however and caged! they have sensitive heating requirements also eat a specific diet. if it is tame the only problem you should worry about is salmonella poisoning as with any reptile.
