turtle pond2007-11-24 2:02:52

im pretty sure im gettin a pond in my backyard. i live on long island, in malverne. i am probably gonna put like eastern painted turtles in there and like red ear sliders and maybe frogs. is this ok? what do i do with them in the winter? i hear them bury themselves, ive been doin lots of research. just makin sure though. as for the turtles are these the right kind? and what kinds of frogs if any can i put in there that wont disturb my the turtles? thanks

Answers:

leopard frogs would probably be best - they are a smaller

bullfrog

in order for everybody to hibernate, place several flowerpots

or buckets filled with soil into the pond so that the top of the pot is even with the surface of the water, that way they will have something to bury in

the red eared sliders with hibernate. sorry not familiar with the other ones. call a pet store that sells them and if they are good they will be able to give you the info.
You will find people with reptile expertise at kingsnake.com, all kinds of reptiles, not just kingsnakes.

I'm not associated with kingsnake, the answers here are just pretty sad.

As long as the pond is deep enough and provides ample locations for hibernation, you should be OK. Don't forget aeration or filtration, your pond shouldn't become stagnant or it won't be good for the animals. Also, they can wander off, so you may want to take that into account if you care (looking for other water etc. which they may or may not find) - particularly if the pond is not big or deep enough. Frogs shouldn't be an issue, they co-habitate all the time, but they may make a tasty dinner for the turtles too (especially as tadpoles!).
