Snakes bite, when they feel endagered or threatened, or if they smell food on you.
It either is attempting to eat or is afraid and biting in defence. Snakes are extremely limited in decision making ability. Much more machine like than mammals.
There is little emotion other than fear. Almost no motivation other than keep the right temperature, eat, defend and occasionally breed.
Fear and protectional instinct, same thing that causes people to fight.
All snakes will bite when threatened or surprised, but most will usually avoid an encounter if possible and only bite as a last resort. Snakes found in and near water are frequently mistaken as being poisonous. Most species of snake are harmless and many bites will not be life-threatening, but unless you are absolutely sure that you know the species, treat it seriously.
When a snake bites a human it's usually out of fear or defense.
A snake will bite you if you provolk it (a defensive property!) It also bites (small mammals like mice and rats) to paralyse and predigest food!
Snakes most often bite because you have invaded what they regard as their 'space'. It is almost always in 'self-defense'. They use their fangs to defend themselves from persons or animals they regards as threats.
fear, the natural instinct to protect it and its young and it may just get ratty

Simple logic. We are scared of snakes , so we threaten them off. They get scared of us so they bite us.
