Contrary to popular belief, true chameleons don't change color to "hide" as much as to "communicate". For instance when a male encounters a female he will change color to advertize his desire to mate, and she will respond with either a willing color/pattern, or a act aggressively and show an unwilling color/pattern. What they do not do is "blend" to the color they are standing on- unless by chameleon you mean anole.and they can only manage green or brown.
That said, if your chameleon is an adult male, he will act aggressively- gaping his mouth, swelling his body, hissing, brightening all colors (especially cool with panther chameleons!!) hold his front foot in a kung fu stance, and coil and uncoil his tail rapidly- at the sight of another male chameleon in the reflection.

Added - they cant turn transparent as their organs dont have the same ability to addapt to the enviroment as their skin

Many people think that chameleons turn color immediately, but it takes some time before they change from a previous color to another. I've had five chameleons and each of them were different in responding to the change of color. They are very interesting pets, but are very delicate.
chameleons don't change colour to match their surroundings, they do it to show what mood they are in and its bad to make a cham change colour unnecessarily, you can kill it.
