what do ineed to have an iguana

what you should be asking yourself is how am i going to afford an iguana?? a decent sized enclosure will cost at least $200. i have mine in a modified ferret cage. it is modified with plexiglass on three sides and the top. the plexiglass keeps in the heat and humidity. so, cage was $200 (about 8 years ago) and plexiglass was close to $100.

then you need heat lamps. don't buy these at a pet store--go to a home improvement store. they will be less, around $6 each. you need at least 2. i have one on in the summer but both on in the winter. lightbulbs. you cannot use your everyday GE bulb. the bulb has to provide UV to the lizard. you will need at least 1 daytime and 1 nighttime bulb. these cost around $10 each, for the lower watts. the higher the watts, the more the $$.

do not use a heatrock. an iguana will lay on it continuously and get burned. nasty. if you feel the urge to use a heating device other than the lamps, although not neccesary, you can get an under the tank heating pad for $20 and up, depending on the size.

they need branches and plants in their habitat. you can use branches from outside but they have to be cleaned first. the best way is to bake them in the oven to kill any nasty critters. silk plants are the best to use if you don't know what plants are poisonous to igs. they like to climb so anything you put in their enclosure will have to be sturdy.

substrate. do not use commercial substrate. an ig can ingest it and become impacted. very very bad. i use PLAIN white paper towels in the bottom of my cage.
