what is a good reptile or amphibian (gecko, others) to keep in a community enclosure2007-11-24 2:03:30

i want to get a large enclosure and have a community (4 or more) of reptiles or amphibians. I'd also like some that I can handle once in a while as well.

Answers:

crested geckos can go together well as long as you only have one male.. water dragons are also a good choice

geckos are nice. so are bearded dragons but they can get big.
Most reptiles aren't recommended for a community enclosure. If you want to set up a vivarium, anoles tend to fare well with other animals. Small tree frogs, firebelly toads, or newts would get along fairly well. Maybe a small day gecko? Just make sure the habitat requirements are met for all of them and that they are all of a similar size so no one gets eaten.
Leopard geckos can be housed together as long as there is only one male. Bearded dragons as long as there is only one male.

Make sure everyone is the same size too just in case.

For the most part reptiles and amphibians don't really get along with each other and will eat anyone small enough to eat.

You are going to have to do lots more research than just asking these fools.

You need to find out and match habitats. Reptiles, especially lizards, have heat, humidity, UV light, and dietary requirements that have to be met exactly or they get sick and die.

For example: Bearded Dragons are a desert species, so you should look up other animals who thrive in a desert. If you pick a Chameleon, you have doomed him to a dry and agonizing death.
