It woulds really help to know where in the USA or World your live as that is a huge help identifying likely snakes.

However.. you must remember that because so many people keep exotic pets/snakes as pets that even if a certain snake is NOT normally found in your area. it still could be because it could be a loose or released pet.

Since you do not know what type of snake this is. stay clear. Do NOT try to trap or catch it. I can not tell you this enough!

If you are worried it is harmful. call the local animal folks where you live.. or the Police.

Local law and animal enforcement can Probably identify the snake itf it is common to your area.

Also know that you can yahoo snakes and maybe find a pic ture.. but since age and enviroment/diet can effect some patterns on snakes it may be hard to find a pic that is exactly what your snake looks like.

You should know that in North America the ONLY native venomous water snake anywhere is the cotton mouth, or also called the water moccosin. They are however Black on top with a lighter white underbody and a very white mouth when it is open,..like cotton white.

It does not sound like that is what you describe. Please know though that the Water Moccosins are very agressive and will actually approach an intruder,..they are also venemous.. they are Pit vipers and WILL for sure bite.

Other snakes that normally do not swim sometimes fall in etc.. and you will see them in the water or they have to cross it etc.. this includes rattle snakes.
