female and male box turtle they are 12 years old
Answers:Use them as paperweights?
let them hibernate. They go by instinct they know what to do.
My friend who is from england used to do this with her turtles. She put them in a shoebox under the kitchen sink, did nothing else, just brought them out in spring. OTher than that, don't know. Just know it was southern England, so that kind of climate. Don't know exact date and how she knew to bring them out other than she said spring.
It is tough for hobbiests to safely hibernate turtles. If you do it indoors, you need to regulate temps, humidity, etc.
It is not overly hard, but it is rather 'persnickity'. Here is a link to a good article about it:
i just leave mine alone.. when he goes to sleep i take him out of his living space and put him in a big container and cover him with his blanket that he uses every year for hibernation.. i got a weird turtle though.. the guy at the pet store the other day could not believe that i brought him in with me..lol
once it starts getting cold and they start trying to hibernate
get a large plastic bin or aquarium, add about 3 inches dirt
and then leaves and debris on top, put turtles in and make sure they are ready, then place bin in an unheated area of your home
dont try to hibernate inside your house with heat on
then watch them when spring warms up
don't let them. If you do, you are taking an unnecessary risk. Much easier just to keep them inside
