In the wild, they will hibernate up to 9 months a year!

In captivity, they can and will hibernate if given the chance, but they don't have to.

The problem, of course, is the common slow-down that many chelonians experience this time of year with the shorter days and lowering temps trigger the urge, but it does not get cool enough to really hibernate, so the turtles stops eating and wastes away.

If you choose to not hibernate the tortoise, you have to offer summery temps and day cycles- or even a bit MORE summery environment.

it all depends on what kind of climate they have. if you have them outdoors, chances are they will if you live in a cooler climate. If you have them indoor, or in a warmer climate, they probably won't. I have been told that as long as its a warmer climate, or kept indoors, they normally don't hibernate.

Any reptile that normally has a hibernation period can be hibernated. The biggest thing to remember is to make sure that you fast them before you hibernate. There are steps that you need to do to ensure that it is done correctly. Make sure you do extensive research on it before hand.

Yes they can however; if not done properly can hurt the Tortoise. So i would recommend not to have him hibernate unless you do extensive research on it first. Their are many websites and books out their to answer your question, but i would recommend that you ready many articles first because their can be a lot of Miss information out their. Every good article will have a common denominator..
