would i be able to get another bearded dragon

i have a bearded dragonm that is 9 inches long. I want to get another bearded dragon to be his "companion" and so they could hopefully mate and lay eggs. Can a bearded dragon live with another? the bearded dragon at the pet store was living with another the same size. can i just take my bearded dragon, ask what the gender is, and get one of the opposite sex?

Beardies will tolerate company but don't need it. The main thing to be aware of is (like people) they won't just get along because you put them together. You may need to separate them permanantly and should be prepared for this (spare viv ec.). However, it can be successful, if you follow certain rules:

- make sure you know your beardies sex and introduce a beardie you know the sex of. Male and female is ok, although the male may be too randy and pester the female for sex and may need to be separated. Female and female is ok. Two males are not as they are very territorial and will fight.

- if you get a male and female, the female should be about a year old+ for breeding (as they will breed). Too young and it could have a detrimental effect on her health. You will also need to care for her appropriately if she is gravid (extra calcium etc). Even if you don't plan to incubate the eggs, you need to treat her the same to avoid calcium crashes, egg binding and other breeding-associated problems.
