If you could rat-proof a room and let them run around in there for 30-60 minutes a day that would make a huge difference.
Well at least there's two so they can play together. If you can't or just don't want to give tthem away at least play with them once a week. Because if you don't take them out often
they might start biting.
maybe you can just let them run around outside of the cage without you snuggling and petting them...i used to close off one room that i made 'rat safe' and would just let them run around freely for an hour or so a day if i didn't have time to spend with them directly...if i were you, i would just keep looking for someone to take them, because they would be much happier with someone to play with them and give them attention
Its good you have them in a huge cage. I would try to find them another home. I know its hard but someone out there might be looking for a couple of ratties. I don't think you should feel bad about not playing with them they have each other. What about letting them out in your room so they can have some time to run around. Maybe then Mr. Fatty could get some exercise.
What you should ask yourself is would you be happy in a cage all day? I had rats when I was younger and let them out as much as possible. Rats love affection and attention. I'm sure you know this because you 've had so many. There also very smart and will come to there name and can be trained to not to poop on you. Alot of people are allergic to the rats beeding and not the actual rat. Try using newspaper instead as long as they cant eat it or regular paper with no ink on it. That cage sounds really nice and as long as they have alot of toys and stuff to do they should be okay. They probably are more missing you than anything. They loved to be tickled. Good luck.
I would say yes, they should have human interaction atleast once a day. My mice always let me know when they want out by chewing on their cages, so I always know they like to be out and they do get bored. Of course these are mice, not rats. But even when there was 5 in a cage, they still wanted out. Doesn't really matter the size of the cage, its still good for them to get out once in a while.
They need their freedom to explore. They are naturally inquisitive animals and the same boring scenery everyday will turn them into warm, furry, paper weights! My eight run and play in a completely rat proofed room which they love. And i'm always looking for more ratties to add to the pack!
I have an allergy to my rats too. When I handle them, I break out in welts. But I love them lots. I have my cages hanging from the ceiling. That way, I leave the cage door open and they can climb on top. They're not alone, so they never feel the need to jump down. It gives them freedom of sorts and security!
