2 weeks old syrian hamsters and driving me crazy2007-11-24 21:57:12

they just opened their eyes 2 days ago.. and boy oh boy.. how SEVEN babies who are discovering the world for the 1st time can be a handfull!! theyre too many to stay in their nest coz they pee and make it wet and im afraid theyll catch a cold when theyre all wet.. so i keep changing that.. but they also want to roam around everywhere in the big cage and the mum and i keep resquing them from falling or getting stuck and all sorts.. so what do i do??

AT 2 WEEKS OLD.. should baby syrian hamsters be free to roam around a small area.. if i specialize a part of the cage for them .. or should they still be kept in the small nest.. or what should they be doing?

Answers:

They should be safe as long as they are in their cage. There's no need to keep them in the nest. Just take out wheels, water bowls, or anything that they could get stuck in or drown in. The mom is just being cautious and trying to bunch the babies all together but there's nothing wrong with letting them explore a little.

When my dwarf hams had babies I actually just got a gigantic cardboard box and filled it up with about 5 inches of bedding to make sure everything would stay dry and put the mom and babies in there (well actually I put the mom in there when she was pregnant). It worked out really well because in a cardboard box there's absolutely nothing they could get stuck under.

They should be walking,climbing and act like monkeys in a zoo, Lol it was the same with me, I wouldnt worry about them geting stuck etc, You can start to hold them at 2 weeks old and they can be taken away from there mother at 4-5 weeks old. Remember to seprate the males and females or they will start to breed.

i think you should keep them in a big area for a few weeks (until they are 8 weeks old if you dont then they will kill each other) and keep them with their mom. Dont put them with their dad or he will kill them. once they are 8 weeks old put them in different cages (including the mom becasuse the dad may not recognise her). for the peeing part... get two coffe lids, fill them with wood shaving and put them with the hamsters. they will use them as toilets. ( may may not).
