A few more questions on Guinea Pigs2007-11-24 21:57:14

First, how do Guinea Pigs show affection? My friends guinea pigs would shove their nose into my fingers when I was petting them as if telling me to pet them more. Do they all do that, or do they do different things?

What kind of pellets do I give them? Any brand? My friend suggested Cavy Cuisine, is this a good choice? Are plain pellets the best?

Appreciate it in advance!

Answers:

That sounds like one of many ways a pig can show affection! One of my boys likes to lick my hands, face, arm, etc. like crazy. Another of mine likes to just plop down on my shoulder or arm. It can vary, depending on the pig's personality.

As far as pellets go, plain pellets are the best. Cavy Cuisine, made by Oxbow, is one of the best. It has less "junk fillers" than typical pellets found at most pet stores. I personally used Timothy Complete by Kaytee (from Petsmart) for a long time, than I switched to Cavy Cuisine - you could physically see a big difference between the two pellets - Kaytee's were brown and Oxbow's were more green, like fresh hay. Cavy Cuisine was more expensive up front, but the bag was bigger and has lasted longer than Kaytee's did.

Plain pellets are the best, I reccomend Oxbow or Blue Seal guinea pig diet. Also they need unlimited timothy hay, fresh veggies everyday that are high in vitamin C. I personally have never tried cavy cuisine so I couldn't tell you there. When picking out your pellet, the rules are simple, is it plain, is the first ingrediant timothy hay, is there added vitamin C? That's what you look for in a pellet. They need at least 7.5 square feet of space for one or two pigs, but 10.5 square feet is better. They should be kept in pairs since they are herd animals and prefer to be with thier own kind. The following are good websites for more info and how to make a C&C cage, the best kind for a healthy piggy.
